Yesterday at Scotia Ice Pond the best Championship game of the past 25 seasons was played to determine a Champion and the #1 seeding in the OHL Cup… Don Mills Flyers vs. Toronto Marlboros. Both coaches, Lindsay Hoffard a former OHL London Knights Coach and presently a scout for the Knights, pitted against Marlboros Dan Brown; less known, but recently inducted into the Etobicoke Sports Hall of Fame for his unselfish commitment to minor hockey.

Let’s forget about the exceptional background of both coaches and turn to the commitment that both team’s players showed in order to succeed. Over three periods the teams exchanged tremendous chances to put the puck into the net. Woroniuk (Don Mills) and McGrath (Marlboros) stood their ground. Shot after shot from both teams either went high and wide, or at one point bounced off of a Marlboro post… Or hit a Don Mills player…blocked shots, sacrifices to clear the puck…you name it…the game had it all! Marlboros penalty kill was great and Don Mills pressure on the power play was relentless!

0-0 after Regulation time! Overtime and the crowd was silenced on the edge of their seats…one mistake…one break and the League Championship could be decided. Fortunately for the Marlboros Ben Jones, “paid the price” to block a shot. Defenseman Elijah Roberts jumped on the loose puck, streaked down on the right side and beat the Don Mills goalie… 1-0 Marlboros to clinch.

Both teams were outstanding in this series. Perhaps a re-match in the OHL Cup finals?
